Swing Set Backyard

Do it yourself backyard work has always been one of my favorite things about spring. Whether I am adding new swing set accessories to my daughter's playground, working in the garden, building myself a tool shed, or doing some other activity, I love the chance to get out into the nice cool, sunny weather and enjoy myself. After being cooped up all winter, who wouldn't? Nonetheless, this year I had an unusually ambitious activity. We needed a new backyard swing set. Apparently, the swing set backyard had had to put up with one too many winters. It was old and decrepit, and it looked so frail that I didn't really trust it to support my daughter. Although it was my first project of the year, I was looking forward to building new backyard swing sets.

Swingset backyard structures are really pretty easy to build. As long as the chain is attached well, the frame is sturdy, and there are no obstacles nearby, a swing set backyard structure can be set up by barely virtually anyone. This year, however, I wanted to make something special. My daughter has always wanted a tree swings, so I decided to...

German Food Recipes

When one thinks of great world cuisine, it is Chinese, French and Italian that comes to mind. However, German food recipes have something to offer and may be undervalued. The country has regional differences and some national favorites. The main meal is taken at mid-day, although smaller lunches and bigger evening meals are increasingly popular. Breakfast usually consists of bread or bread rolls spread with jam, honey, cured meats or cheese. Bread is important to the German psyche, with 300 different kinds for sale.

Germans are meat lovers on the whole, especially when it comes to their beloved sausage, of which there are 1,500 varieties! Pork is the most favored meat and then poultry and beef. German food recipes often involve boar, rabbit or venison too. Pot-roasting is the preferred method of cooking the meat. Hot mustard often accompanies the meat or horseradish.

Vegetables are sometimes eaten as side dishes or as part of stews and soups. Fried onions and asparagus are very popular. Potatoes have always been a staple but noodles and dumplings are eaten a lot in the south. Fish dishes tend to include strong flavored fish such as herrings, tuna, sardine or mackerel. Salmon is also a common dish.

There is not much call for spicy food, most people preferring the flavor to come through on its own or with some unobtrusive herbs. German food recipes are often washed down with beer or wine. Both wine and beer is successfully exported all over the world and has a good reputation. The most popular non-alcoholic beverages are coffee and apple juice mixed with sparkling mineral water. Fresh fruit is a common ingredient of desserts in German food recipes, decorating cakes and in pies. Cheesecake is a favorite end to a meal or as a snack with coffee.

As with all culinary traditions, influences from the outside play a part. There are plenty fast food chains in the towns and cuisine from other countries is growing in popularity. There are a lot of French, Chinese and Italian restaurants and the Turkish immigrant community has popularized Turkish food. In fact, it was Turkish settlers who invented the donner kebab, a late night supper for many revelers on their way home from the tavern. German food recipes are mainly what keeps the Germans happy. They may not be to every tourist's taste but it's wholesome, home grown food and it should be given a chance.

Kids Health

If you're a parent, you worry about your kids health and well-being. You want your kids to grow up healthy and happy, but sometimes it seems like an uphill battle. Besides the colds, flus and other childhood illnesses, there are other issues that are ongoing. You hear about the epidemic proportions of childhood obesity in this country. Lack of adequate exercise combined with poor dietary habits, along with too many sodas and unhealthy snacks contributes. So what's a parent to do? Here are a few tips that help you nurture kids health and take a load off your list of worries.

It's never too early to start instilling healthy habits in your kids. Demonstrate by example. For snacks and beverages, choose fruit, yogurt, cheese and crackers, and juices. If a toddler gets used to receiving cookies, candy and sodas for between-meal fare, you'll have a hard time changing these habits later.

Other kids health issues can crop up as a result of these sugar fests. For example, tooth decay can begin early. Youngsters as young as six can become overweight, causing a lifelong struggle with weight management. So when the kids start saying how...

Soccer Basics

Learning any new sport is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of hard work. There are many sports from which to choose, with most going with things like baseball, basketball, and football. However, there are other sports out there that are gaining popularity, though they are not available at all schools. Soccer is one of those sports. Some schools touch on the soccer basics in physical education classes, but in order to play on a team, you have to be sure the basics are taught and securely fixed.

Getting out on the field to play is often what some think of as the best part of playing soccer, and of course that is usually true. However, some of the most important soccer basics are taught off the field. In order to be a great player, you have to know the rules inside and out. That means studying the basics of soccer that include where each position can go, what they can do, and also what might bring about a penalty. This can be done in conjunction with field play, but it has to be done early. That makes training much easier.
